    Article summary

    What is a DOCX file?

DOCX is the new standard format for Microsoft Word documents. Introduced from 2007 with the release of Microsoft Office 2007, the structure of this new Document format was changed from plain binary to a combination of XML and binary files. The new file type has advantages of small file sizes, fewer changes of corruption and well-formatted images representation.

Then why do my word documents need to be saved as a .doc?

The lightweight .docx format is not designed to support VBA or macros, particularly regarding images. Users that have utilized the new .docx format will see continual performance issues (lag and weird behavior) regarding tables from excel that are inserted as images in word.

What to do if you have saved your template as a .docx

    1.  Save the file as a .doc file type.
    2. Click the File menu in the upper left. Click "Info" if the information page is not immediately visible.
    3. On the next screen, click "Edit Links to Files".
    4.  Scroll to the bottome of the list in the subsequent window. If you encounter any errors, just OK/cancel out and continue.
    5. Once at the bottom, hold Shift and click the bottom-most item (this will select all items) and click "Break Link"
      Click Yes to confirm.
