The LightBox US EPA Sites API returns superfund and brownfield sites as defined by the EPA.
The EPA defines a superfund site as "Superfund, also known as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), is a federal program that cleans up hazardous waste sites and other environmental emergencies. The program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1980 and is run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The goals of Superfund are to: Protect human health and the environment, Make responsible parties pay for cleanup, Involve communities in the process, and Return sites to productive use."
The EPA defines a brownfield site as "a property that may be difficult to expand, redevelop, or reuse due to the presence or potential presence of a pollutant, contaminant, or hazardous substance."
